Biography
Supay is a Peruvian Rock band that was officially born in October 2000. Its name is a Quechua(*) word that refers to an entity of the Inca mythology, which symbolizes the duality that governs nature.
The band was a trio at the beginning, until 2001 that the quintet was structured as such. Some years later, as a sextet, in 2004 Supay recorded its first album entitled "Confusión" (“Confusion”), which characterizes its music by the utilization of Andean Wood Wind instruments such as andean flutes, quenachos, panpipes, tarcas and others, not necessarily limited to the typical pentatonic scales, with a rhythmic base and Progressive Rock influences, shaping and fusing human and spiritual experiences of its band members. The use of Andean Winds has remained since then as a band’s hallmark.
In July 2005, Mylodon Records, an independent Chilean progressive and avant-garde rock music label, launched the second Supay’s album named “El Viaje” ("The Journey") and the re-release of previous disk "Confusion", the following year. Later this album was distributed in America and Japan, and finally being distributed in Europe by the French music label Musea Records.
After a stand by period due to the departure of some of the band members, Supay comes back to the exploration of sound and start creating and recording their third album in 2011. This time time, Luis Proaño and Gustavo Valverde contact Williams León, and lately a search for bass and drums players starts, when Luis Medina and Carlos Palacios join and get quickly involved with the band's path. After the right participation of Johnny Pérez (wood winds player) with the band on a concert at Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma starting the year 2013, the multi-winds player Giomar Camino and drummer Alberto Benites join Supay band and get quickly involved with the project.
The third Album named “Señales” ("Sings") has been presented during 2013, an it is an amalgam of melodies, harmonies and rhythms, in which the sound of acoustic, electronic and virtual instruments togheter with the native and andean wood winds travel from ethereal and spatial environments, through rhythmic and psychedelic atmospheres to a denser and heavier space. “Señales” also contains voice in one track, as another musical instrument, which increase the band's creative and sound range. This Album will soon be released by Mylodon Records.
Supay is listed in the Prog Archives (www.progarchives.com) located into the Progressive Rock genre, together with renowned Peruvian bands, such as Traffic Sound, Frágil and Flor de Loto.
Current Supay’s lineup is: Giomar Camino (Classic winds, Andean and Native Wood Winds), Luis Medina (Bass), Alberto Benites (Drums), Luis Proaño (Guitar) and Gustavo Valverde (keyboards and Virtual Musical Instruments).
