Biography
Claudio Gabis (18/03/49) was guitarist of the first line up of Los Abuelos de la nada and was also member of Manal together with Javier Martinez and Alejandro Medina, with whom he recorded 7 albums.
He formed his first group ("Bubblin Awe") in 1967, with which he participated in the frequent happenings of the Instituto Di Tella, epicenter of the vanguard movement of the sixties. In 1971 he joined La Pesada del Rock and Roll, with which he released his first two solo albums
After taking part in the film "Rock hasta que se ponga el sol" he settled down in Brazil (where he played with Ney Matogrosso) and he later studied at Berkley University, USA. Back in Brazil he recorded with Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti, apart from being a member of the fusion group Index. At that moment he started teaching musicians who are now great guitarists in Brazil
IN 1984 he returned to Argentina, where he gave courses and seminars in different cultural centers, conservatories and universities. He did radio programs and collaborated in specialized music magazines
In 1985 he formed a blues group called"La Nave", together with Oscar Spal (voice and harmonica), Edgardo Fernández (bass and backing vocals) and Daniel Fernández (drums). They recorded an album with Andrés Calamaro’s participation called "Cuenta regresiva".
Throughout 1986-87 he made many soundtracks to films, plays and dancing and he participated in numerous recordings, among which in the LP "Cómo conseguir chicas", of Charly García.
In 1989 he settled down in Madrid, where he continued teaching at the Escuela de Música Creativa. He created a group called "Noche de blues" and he was the leader of Claudio Gabis Group, devoted to jazz-fusion, which has performed in local clubs and at the International Festival Mar del Jazz, en 1993.
In 1995 he released a solo album called "Convocatoria", a kind of homage to the Argentine rock, where he played classics such as "Jugo de Tomate", "Rock de la mujer perdida", "No hay tiempo de más", "Malas condiciones" and "Desconfío". In this occasion he invited León Gieco, Horacio Fontova, Joaquín Sabina, Andrés Calamaro, Charly García, Ricardo Soulé, Ricardo Mollo, Alejandro Medina and Pedro Guerra. It was first played at the discoteque El Roxy, together with García y Medina. A second part was released in 1997, with material recorded at the same time.
